Reimagining Where We Live

Australia
2023

Proposal for an aged care facility which imagines a model of living centred around landscape, small households and the integration of shared services with the community.

The scheme proposes four separate household buildings of 15 residents each placed in a generous landscape setting and connected by a walkway “street”. Articulating the Households as individual buildings engenders a sense of belonging for the residents, breaks down an otherwise large institutional mass, and allows excellent daylighting and shorter corridors. Internal and external circulation is kept simple, clear and direct, aiding legibility for residents and assisting staff support.

The four household buildings are complemented by two further buildings: the staff “Home Base” with reception, common spaces and administrative functions, and a “public” building which connects residents with the wider town community. This building provides social amenities: a cafe, grocer and hairdresser, which can be used by residents, visitors, and the general public. Including these amenities enhances the autonomy of the elderly residents but also fosters active engagement with the surrounding township, inviting them to share a sense of support for the residents.

The distinctive curves of the architectural forms break down the elevations and work to hold external landscape spaces as if “in the curve of an arm”. These forms also register the moving sunlight and shadow across their curved surfaces through the course of the day, and provide a strong backdrop to the various resident gardens.
